TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Construction is underway in South Tampa on a Smart Home for a veteran who lost three limbs in Afghanistan.

The Tampa Fire Rescue Honor Guard presented colors, and Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn helped break ground at a ceremony Thursday morning on Interbay Avenue.

The home is being built for Sergeant Michael Nicholson, US Marine Corps.  Sgt. Nicholson lost both his legs and left arm two years ago during an improvised explosive device attack in Afghanistan.

The Gary Sinise Foundation and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation are sponsoring the building of his new house.  The "Building for America's Bravest" program sponsors homes that are custom-tailored to the needs of severely wounded veterans like Nicholson.

Nicholson chose South Tampa because he grew up in this community. Tampa home builder Ramos Design Build will lead the construction project.  A fundraising concert in Curtis Hixon Park featuring the Lt. Dan Band will assist in paying for the project.

The concert will take place Friday, May 10 at 7 p.m.
