Plymouth Town Council Member charged with DWI, hit and run

PLYMOUTH, N.C. -

A 14-year-old girl who was hit by a car Thursday night is still in the hospital.

Troopers say she had serious injuries to her face.

Plymouth Town Council Member Aneka Gibson is in jail facing felony charges after troopers say she hit a teenager while driving intoxicated and left the scene.

Troopers say around 7:15 Thursday night, a person driving a red dodge truck with chrome wheels hit a 14-year-old girl walking down Main St. and fled the scene.  Witnesses called police, who tracked down the vehicle and the person, who they later identified as Aneka Gibson.  Once they realized Gibson was a town council member, they contacted the State Highway Patrol to investigate.

Troopers say Gibson was also driving while impaired, blowing a .27, which is more than three times the legal limit in North Carolina.

The victim was airlifted to Vidant Health in Greenville.

Plymouth Mayor Brian Roth says Gibson is still on the council. He says neither the council nor Plymouth residents can vote a member off. She must either be convicted of the crimes she is charged with or resign.

Gibson is charged with driving while impaired, felony hit and run and felony injury while being impaired.  Troopers say she didn't have insurance or a recent inspection.  She also had fictitious tags.

She's in jail with a secured bond set at $10,000.
