2 women die after a head-on collision on Interstate 26

Posted: Updated:

Kingsport Police Department received a call regarding a traffic crash with injury on Interstate 26 at the 1.6 mile marker shortly before 9:00 p.m.  Police say a woman in a 1999 Toyota Camry driving in the west bound in the east bound lane of Interstate 26, hit a 2002 Toyota Camry head on.  Officers say both drivers received fatal injuries due to the impact and neither were wearing a seat belt.

Officers say a 2006 Nissan Sentra also driving in the east bound lane on Interstate 26  had to swerve to avoid hitting the two crashed vehicles.  Police say the Nissan driver steered to the right and lost control, exited the roadway and overturned.  Police say the Nissan driver received minor injuries and was wearing a seat belt.

The Kingsport Police Department Traffic Unit is investigating the incident.  Investigators say at this time it is unknown if drugs, alcohol or speed were involved in the crash.

The names of the drivers will be released as soon as next of kin are notified.

Kingsport dispatch confirms a head-on collision has shut down part of interstate 26 tonight. The crash happened near mile-marker 2.

As of 9:30, both Eastbound lanes were closed. News Channel 11 checked back in with dispatch around 10:30, and learned one lane of eastbound traffic was reopened.

Dispatch say two cars were involved.

We'll continue to update this story as more details become available.
