Posted: Updated:

Detectives from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office are looking for victims who may have been duped by a man posing as a member of the military.

James Edward Coombs, 39, of Cameron, is thought to be posing at various times as a Fort Bragg Special Forces officer, a Sergeant First Class soldier or a Federal Air Marshal.

Officials say Coombs approaches unsuspecting victims and then asks them for money. He then tells them his wallet was stolen and he doesn't have enough money to get him back to the military base.

Coombs is known to frequent Walmart parking lot on Skibo Road in Fayetteville and has also been arrested at rest stops along I-95, wearing the military uniform while asking for money.

Coombs has an extensive criminal record that includes possession of a stolen car, stolen credit cards, drug charges, fraud, forgery and disorderly conduct.

Anyone who may have been victimized by Coombs is urged to contact the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office at (910) 323-1500.
