House bill seeks to block foreign laws in NC

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

An effort to prevent North Carolina courts from applying foreign or certain religious laws to North Carolina domestic and child custody cases has been recommended by a General Assembly committee.

A House judiciary committee approved a measure Wednesday to prohibit a judge or agency from using parts of any legal system that would cause or lead to violations of fundamental constitutional rights in those cases.

Some conservatives have been worried about Islamic "sharia" law being applied in American courts. Bill sponsor Rep. Chris Whitmire of Transylvania County says the bill responds to "any and all" cases where foreign laws have been used, but he's not aware of it happening in North Carolina.

The bill must pass the House by Thursday night or the idea is likely dead until 2015.
