Rescue crews save woman trapped in her car

NEW BERN, N.C. -

It took a dozen or so people to save a woman trapped in her car Sunday in New Bern.

The driver was changing lanes when she clipped the front end of another car, causing her car to spin out of control, said New Bern police Sgt. Doug Ipock. The woman's car hit a curb, rolled down an embankment and struck a utility pole.

The wreck happened around 6 PM on U.S. 17 in New Bern in front of Books-A-Million, near the U.S. 70 overpass.

Firefighters had to use the jaws of life to cut the roof off the car and extract the driver, who was pinned, said incident commander Arthur Broome of the New Bern Fire Department.

"I was walking my dog and I saw this girl stuck in a car. I didn't know how they were going to take her out because she was pressed there," said Manny Leon, a witness. "The door was against her, the roof was down on her… The fire department did a great job. It took them a while. She was a little bit heavy, and the car's not a big car."

It is unknown whether any charges are pending against the driver, said Sgt. Ipock.
