Preparations underway for large crowds expected Memorial Day

EMERALD ISLE, N.C. -

In Carteret County, lifeguards at the beach are on-duty for the first time this season.

Monday was the first day of roving beach patrols in Emerald Isle. Lifeguards will be on duty every week for the rest of the summer in anticipation of large crowds.

Memorial Day weekend is the start of summer tourism season. Small businesses and local governments have been preparing for months.

"About this point, we really need ‘em. I mean, it's a cold winter down here there's not many people, so this is when we make our livelihood is in the summer," said Josh Sawyer, a manager at the Reel Outdoors in Emerald Isle.

According to the Crystal Coast Tourism Authority, tourism is a $279 million industry in Carteret County, employing nearly three thousand people.
