Area Red Cross workers already in Oklahoma

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

When Mother Nature hits, disasters can follow.

The American Red Cross are just some of the people to help pick up the pieces.

Just a day after the deadly tornado in Oklahoma, local Red Cross workers are already there.

Autum Mihm works with the Pitt County Red Cross. Along with hundreds of workers from around the country, Mihm made the trip down to Moore, Oklahoma to start trying to see how they can help.

Mihm said they are currently working to determine what type of help and how much help is needed.

Right now those on the ground are setting up shelters and food and water distribution.

Mihm said a disaster like this is not just about dealing with the damage you can see.

"We have mental health counselors there to provide that support. Whether they're the ones that we have in the shelter, or we have case workers out in the field, or even just a number that they can call to talk to somebody if they need it," says Mihm

If they're called on, the Pitt County chapter said volunteers from the east could leave as early as Monday.
