Greenville Police K9 tracks down armed robbery suspect

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

A police dog helped Greenville Police officers track down an armed robbery suspect early Thursday morning.

Police were called to a robbery alarm at the Wilco-Hess gas station at 3000 Stantonsburg Road around 1:30 a.m.

The clerk told police a man came into the store armed with a knife. Police say the suspect then threatened the clerk and took cigarettes. 

Officers set up a perimeter around the store and a police dog began tracking the suspect toward Park West Drive. The dog took officers to 1285 Park West Drive where they found 52-year-old Michael Wayne Nelson. 

Officers then recovered stolen cigarettes from the suspect's apartment. 

Nelson was arrested and charged with one count of robbery with a dangerous weapon. He's in the Pitt County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond.

Police tell 9 On Your Side Nelson has prior arrests for larceny, burglary, and obtaining property by false pretense.
