RICHLANDS, N.C. -

A car crashed into a convenience store in Onslow County and knocked out power to a nearby intersection Thursday night, according to the Highway Patrol.

Trooper Alverado tells 9 On Your Side the accident happened around 7:30 p.m. along U.S. 258 near Richlands.

We're told 18-year-old Reginald Morton was traveling north on 258 when his Chevy Cavalier crossed into the southbound lane near the intersection of NC 111. His car then struck another vehicle stopped at the intersection, went airborne, then hit a power box which supplies power to the traffic lights there. The power was reportedly out for hours as crews worked to fix that box.

Trooper Alverado says Morton's car then flipped over and crashed into the side of the Stop & Shop gas station at 5137 Richlands Hwy.

Morton and his passenger were transported to Onslow Memorial Hospital. The passenger was treated and released. We're told Morton has some bad cuts from the accident, and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The three people in the other vehicle suffered minor injuries.

Troopers say speed and distracted driving were factors in this crash. We're told the driver may have been looking down at his cell phone when the accident happened.

Morton is facing charges for reckless driving and driving left of center.
