Local bands to march in D.C. on Memorial Day

Posted: Updated:

Four marching bands from the Triangle are among those participating Monday in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, according to a news release from Rep. David Price.

Included in the parade are bands from Raleigh's Sanderson, Athens Drive and Broughton high schools as well as Orange High in Hillsborough.

There are 22 bands from across the country in the field, which will march down Constitution Avenue.

"As a former member of the Marching Tar Heels, I want to wish the band members good luck and congratulate them on being selected," Price said in a statement. "Participating in the National Memorial Day Parade honoring those who have sacrificed so much for our country is a high honor."

The National Memorial Day Parade is hosted by the American Veterans Center. Established in 2005, the parade has quickly grown into a major event drawing more than 250,000 spectators in 2012.

The Sanderson band, according to its website, plans to depart Saturday morning at 6:30 a.m. for Washington to visit sites before participating in the 2 p.m. parade Monday.

The Broughton band planned to depart Friday and the Athens band was leaving Saturday morning.

The parade will also include active duty military, youth groups and hundreds of veterans from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, and Operations Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom.
