Bethel police arrest man for attempted murder

BETHEL, N.C. -

Bethel police have arrested a man for attempted murder.

Officers say they were patrolling the area of Smith and Jefferson streets when they heard shots fired around 5:40 Sunday evening. They found William Michael Cherry lying in a yard near the roadway of Jefferson street with a gunshot to his upper leg.

Witnesses were able to describe the suspect and vehicle. They arrested and charged Anthony Jermaine Purvis with attempted murder.

Purvis is in the Pitt County Detention Center on a $750,000.00 bond.

Cherry was treated and later released from Vidant Medical Center.
