Carteret County man dead after deputy-involved shooting

Posted: Updated:
NEWPORT, N.C. -

The man killed Friday in a shoot-out with Carteret County deputies has now been identified.

Michael Neal Peters, 54 of Newport, is dead following Friday's events.

The SBI is investigating the deputy-involved shooting.

Deputies in the investigation were told by Peters by phone that he did not want to live anymore.

After receiving information that the Broad Creek man had threatened to harm another person as well, Carteret County Sheriff's deputies arrived at his two-story apartment building on Highway 24 near Cafe 24 to make contact with him, said Carteret County sheriff Asa Buck.

When the man saw deputies arrive, he went inside and barricaded himself, Buck said, at which point the Special Response Team (SRT) was called.

A hostage negotiator tried to negotiate with the man, but he came out with handguns and started shooting at deputies, Buck said.

Deputies returned fire, killing the suspect outside his apartment, Buck said. Several shots were exchanged, one of which landed in a mobile home across the street from the apartment building, Buck said.

No deputies were injured, and the suspect's name is being withheld pending notification of his death to family.

Law enforcement agencies from Pine Knoll Shores, Atlantic Beach and the State Highway Patrol assisted.

Because it is a deputy-involved shooting, the SBI will now take over the investigation.
