Conley Baseball falls in Game Three of State Championship

Posted: Updated:

Despite a valiant comeback in the seventh inning the DH Conley Vikings could not do enough to catch Weddington late Saturday night. The Warriors outlasted the Vikings 17-14 in game three of the State Championship Series. For Weddington, it's their second straight 3A State Championship.

After throwing Davis Kirkpatrick to force the final game, Coach Jason Mills went with freshman Peyton Ahlers as his starting pitcher. Ahlers gave up a 2-run home run to Alex Bostic in the opening frame and was pulled shortly after that. From there it was Mike Fuller, Alex Boyd and Tyler Crum who tried to keep Conley in it on the mound.

The Vikings made a push in the third inning offensively scoring four runs. It was 5-3 Vikings after three innings of play. Weddington scored four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and seven in the seventh to pull away.

Down 17-7 going into the final frame the Vikings would not give up. They poured in seven runs to cut the defect to three. Eventually Weddington would end the inning, thus the season.

Outfielder Matt Boyd led DH Conley at the plate going four for five with four runs batted in. Tyler Garrett and Aaron Martin also tacked on three hits a piece.

Conley finishes their season with a final record of 28-5.
