Mobile apps that find sex offenders before they find you

Posted: Updated:

After the arrest of numerous sex offenders in the east, some of them repeat offenders, 9 On Your Side is finding tools parents can use to better know their neighborhood.

Apps like the North Carolina Department of Justice's Sex Offender Registry can go a long way in helping people be aware of their surroundings and are free downloads for Android and iPhone.

We talked to one mother with a powerful motivation to keep her children safe.

"It's that easy. An innocent child could want a hug or something... I can't explain it," said Dayna Mousley, who says the memories of being sexually abused as a child are too much.

"That's where they take you in at and…It's devastating," she said.

Now a proud parent of three girls, Mousely says she'll do anything to keep that same devastation from her children.

She searches for sex offenders, constantly.

Mousley uses mobile apps, many of them valid tools, she says, to keep your kids safe.

It's something she says parents often overlook. Mousley just searches for the keywords "sex offender" in her smartphone's app marketplace.

Mousley says apps like "Sex Offender Search" lets her kids check in from their phone and it notifies her of the sex offenders in the area.

"There's no reason for anybody to not stand-up for their children and get the alerts into their phone," said Mousley.
