Free Fish Saturday in Kinston

Posted: Updated:
KINSTON, N.C. -

Dozens of kids and their parents cast their lines to kick off National Fishing and Boating Week.

On Saturday, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and the Neuse Sports Shop co-sponsored a free fishing event at Kinston's Neuseway Nature Center.

Kids had the opportunity  to fish in a pond stocked with fresh fins.

The Wildlife Resources Commission district two fisher biologist, Justin Homan, says he looks forward to outreach events.

"When you can have an event like this where people can come out on the weekend and catch fish, it's nice to see; especially, if it's somebody that's never caught a fish before. You can take them that day from not even knowing how to use a fishing pole, [and] they might catch their first fish when they didn't know how to use it when they showed up," said Homan.

Saturday's event was one of 35 kids fishing events sponsored by the Wildlife Resources Commission.
