Havelock firefighter honored for bravery

Posted: Updated:

A local firefighter got special recognition—a medal of honor—for rushing into a burning house to save a baby's life.

Monday evening the city of Havelock awarded firefighter/EMT Charlie Winter for his bravery on April 23.

That was the day a fire destroyed a home near the intersection of East Main Street and Pineview Street, while one-year-old Dylan Burkett was trapped inside.

Winter climbed in through a bedroom window and saved the baby, who was sitting on a bed surrounded by smoke.

Winter says he's proud of his award, but he's even happier to see Dylan doing OK.

"No one goes out looking for these things, but it was very nice they thought about it like that, so it was a good feeling, gratifying, grateful, very nice of them," said Winter.

The Burkett family says the fire changed their lives, giving them a greater appreciation for life.

"Monetary donations helped them immensely with rent and electric, they've got more clothes than they had before," said Richard Matson, Dylan's grandfather.
