UNC football team at bottom of ACC in academic measure

The University of North Carolina's football team had the lowest academic scores of any ACC football program in a key NCAA measure, according to data released Tuesday.

The Academic Progress Rates are intended to measure academic progress by collegiate schools. Scores below certain thresholds can result in NCAA punishments.

The APR is based on four-year data, and the average APR for Division I football was 949.

Carolina posted an APR of 934 for the four-year period that ended in 2012, the NCAA said. That was well below N.C. State University's 947 for football and Duke University's 989.

North Carolina's football program has been under intense scrutiny in recent years, with multiple probes revealing players took no-show classes for easy grades.

Football coach Butch Davis was fired, athletics director Dick Baddour resigned early so a new AD could be hired and Chancellor Holden Thorp stepped down and eventually took a position at another university.

In men's basketball, Duke led the ACC with an APR of 995, with N.C. State third at 984 and UNC eighth at 959.

In women's basketball, Duke was fifth at 978, N.C. State sixth at 976 and UNC ninth at 963.
