New York City cab hits a mother and her baby in a stroller

Posted: Updated:

We have an amazing rescue story out of New York City.  A mother and her 8-month-old are alive and well after a car ran into them on a sidewalk.

Alondra Gervacio was walking, pushing her daughter Perla in a stroller down a sidewalk Tuesday, when a livery cab jumped the curb, crashed into them and then slammed into a Dunkin Donuts.

The mother frantically tried to pry the baby out of the stroller under the car.  Relatives, like cousin Vanessa Sanchez, are grateful they're alive.

"She reacted so fast and we would've been so scared and we wouldn't know what to do," said Sanchez. "It looked like the stroller got completely crushed by the car. And it was just a miracle that Perla didn't get hurt."

Police say the cab driver had a heart attack and lost consciousness behind the wheel.  He later died.  Baby Perla was kept in a hospital overnight for observation, but is doing fine now.
