Locals ring in Father's Day with a splash

KINSTON, N.C. -

More than 70 million dads were honored in the United States on Sunday for Father's Day.

According to the Census Bureau, Americans first celebrated father's day back in 1910. In 1972, President Richard Nixon signed Father's Day into law and the country has been celebrating the holiday ever since.

The Faircloth's are a military family; so, spending a holiday together is rare. That all changed this year as their dad, Matthew Faircloth, was home this Father's Day.

"I haven't been home too many summers because I'm always deployed; so, this will be the first father's day that I've been home in a while, so it's fun," said Faircloth.

To celebrate, the Faircloth's spent the day at a Kinston water park.

The Hamilton's are another eastern North Carolina ringing in Father's Day with water. Their family tradition is spending Father's Day fishing in Kinston.

Seven-year-old Destiny Hamilton says it's great spending time with her dad on his special day.

"It's kind of fun to have this brother and dad time since it's father's day," said Hamilton.
