Shooting near NC elementary school after undercover drug bust

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -

A shooting at a North Carolina elementary school turns out to be part of an undercover drug operation.

It happened near Hidden Valley Elementary School in Charlotte Tuesday afternoon.

Police Chief Rodney Monroe says an informant was shot in the shoulder.  Undercover officers working with that informant then fired back, hitting one of the suspects in the head.

But now some are wondering why the deal had to go down in front of the school while some staff were still inside.

"The location was determined by the individuals setting up the drug deal," said Monroe, Charlotte-Mecklenbug Police Chief.  "But we believed that we had ample protection for those inside the school as well as those within the area covered at that time."

Thankfully, no one in the school or associated with the school was injured.
