Study: Arrested 'Moral Monday' protesters are nearly all from NC

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Civitas Institute study of Moral Monday protesters finds that 98 percent of those arrested at the state legislature are from North Carolina.

Civitas president Francis DeLuca said the conservative think tank wanted to determine "who is really involved in these protests." Republican Gov. Pat McCrory recently characterized the protesters as "outsiders," while Sen. Thom Goolsby (R-New Hanover) described them as angry former hippies.

The Civitas review concluded 80 percent of the protesters are employed or retired, while 5 percent are students. More than half are members of the clergy or work in health care or education.

The review found 80 percent of those arrested at the protests organized by the state NACCP are white.

Seventy-seven percent are Democrats, with another 21 percent registered as unaffiliated. One percent are Republicans.
