Budget cuts force closing of Head Start school in New Bern

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. -

A local school for pre-K kids is closing its doors for good this summer, administrators say, because of budget cuts.

The Charles Taylor Child Development Center in New Bern is holding its last Head Start class on August 31.

The nonprofit running the school, Coastal Community Action, hosted a meeting Thursday evening to explain to parents why it's happening.

CCA says they voted last month to close the school because of a sequestration-related federal funding cut of about $325,000.

They say 18 of the students enrolled have the option of transferring to one of two other Head Start schools in New Bern, the FR Danyus Center and the Duffyfield Center.

Eight students currently enrolled have the option of receiving home-based training. A total of 44 students attend the school, 18 of which are expected to graduate from Head Start this summer.

"It was our, the last thing we would have wanted to do, but after looking at all the scenarios, and the most possible way to have the least impact on the community and to the families, closing Charles Taylor as the most viable," said Charlotte Neely of Coastal Community Action.

CCA says there are seven Head Start schools in Craven, Carteret, Jones, and Pamlico counties, but come September, there will only be six.
