A 22-year-old man was shot by a Zebulon police officer after he shot at law enforcement on the scene Saturday morning.

A Zebulon police officer responded to a 911 call around 6 a.m. concerning a disturbance at a residence at 908 Moss Road, the Wake County Sheriff's Office confirmed.

Upon the arrival of the responding officer, Derek Seven Smith walked out of the residence and began firing a weapon at the officer. The Zebulon police officer fired back, striking Smith, authorities said.

Deputies from the Wake County Sheriff's Office arrived just after the Zebulon officer.

Smith was transported to WakeMed. His condition is not immediately known.

Smith's grandparents, Willie Woods, 81, and Betty Sue, 64, were also transported to the hospital for injuries sustained from Smith while trying to disarm him, the sheriff's office said. Authorities would not comment on the extent of their injuries. Woods and his wife reside at home on Moss Road.

The Zebulon officer involved in the shooting was not injuries, according to authorities.

The SBI is investigating the incident. The officer involved has been placed on paid administrative duty while the SBI investigates.

The sheriff's office said similar calls have been made to this address in the past.
