NC drivers to pay more at the gas pump

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

We're all about to pay more to fill up our tanks in North Carolina, even though the national average for gas is going down.

The NC Dept. of Revenue is rolling out a new gas tax increase beginning July 1st.

It's a small hike, less than a penny, but over time it makes a difference.  The tax applies to all purchases of gas including diesel and alternative fuels through the end of the year.

Meanwhile, drivers are seeing some relief at the pumps across the country in time for the summer driving season.

AAA is reporting gas is down a penny since Friday and four cents in the past week.

The current national average is now $3.58 a gallon.  Drivers are paying the most for fuel in Hawaii at $4.33 a gallon.  Gas is the cheapest in South Carolina where drivers can fill-up for $3.26 a gallon.
