Wake Forest man killed in early morning accident

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A 23-year-old Wake Forest man died after he was involved in an early morning accident Tuesday on in Raleigh.

Raleigh police said an officer saw a car driving above the posted speed limit on Falls of Neuse Road around 2 a.m.

The officer turned around and attempted to stop the vehicle but the driver did not stop. The driver, later identified as Samuel Joseph Johnson, sped up to 102 miles per hour in a 45 mile per hour zone in an attempt to elude the pursuing officer, according to an accident report. 

Johnson lost control of his vehicle, over corrected, and then hit a light pole and tree at 55 miles per hour, police said.

Johnson was declared dead at the scene.
