Durham T-shirt pokes fun at Cary's dull image

Posted: Updated:

A new T-shirt by a Durham clothing company pokes fun at Cary, boldly proclaiming, "I'd rather be shot in Durham than die of boredom in Cary."

"It's playing into the stereotypes," said Gabriel Eng-Goetz, founder and designer of Runaway, a Durham clothing company. "But everyone knows Durham has changed."

The shirts went on sale for $20 on the company's website Thursday.

Durham has long chaffed at its violent image, while people in Cary are quick to say the town is more lively than outsiders think.

"We know it's controversial but it's really just a joke," Eng-Goetz said. "Even people I know from Cary thought it was funny."

Eng-Goetz, 27, grew up in Durham and lives there now. And he hopes the T-shirts appeal to the young crowd now finding a home in the Bull City.

"This one's definitely a little edgy," he said. "We'll see how it goes."
