Men on pretrial release once again arrested with drugs

Posted: Updated:

Two men on pretrial release in Lenoir County were arrested once again on drug charges.

On June 26, Lenoir County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Detectives received information that Anthony Spear, 45, of Deep Run and Billy Franklin Thigpen of Seven Springs were in possession of illegal drugs.

When detectives went to Spears' residence and spoke with him at the door they immediately smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the residence. After Spears granted consent for detectives to search the residence they located approximately seven pounds of marijuana. Spears was charged in February 2013 with trafficking marijuana after detectives found 63 pounds of marijuana at his house. Spear's was on pretrial release for those pending charges.  In the current investigation, Spears was arrested and charged with Possession of Schedule VI Marijuana and given as $100,000 bond.

On the same night Narcotics Detectives went to Thigpens home in Seven Springs and executed a search warrant. During the search narcotics detectives seized about one pound of marijuana and drug paraphernalia from the home. Thigpen had been previously placed on house arrest when he allegedly sold illegal narcotics in February 2013. Thigpen was charged with 36 felony drug charges at that time. For this investigation, Billy Franklin Thigpen was arrested and charged with Trafficking Opiates by possession, trafficking opiates by sell and trafficking opiates by delivering, Maintaining a Dwelling for Controlled Substances and Manufacturing Schedule VI.  Thigpen was given a $100,000 secured bond.

In a press release Sheriff Chris Hill stated "these two defendants failed to realize that my narcotics investigators are highly motivated and are pooling resources to assist them to get the job done.  I hope the drug dealers in this county are getting the message that they may be next.  I fully credit these arrests to all of the detectives, agents and outside agencies involved.  Their efforts are making an impact in Lenoir County."
