Balling for Jasmine: Community raises funds for teen fighting leukemia

Posted: Updated:
BETHEL, N.C. -

On Saturday, dozens of people hit the basketball court to help a local teenager fight cancer.

Several community leaders, teachers, and friends put together "Balling for Jasmine Matthews" fundraiser. The fundraiser was held at the New Wynn Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Bethel. To raise money organizers sold plates of food and hosted a three-on-three basketball tournament.

"I'm at a loss for words," said Matthews

"She was so excited about the fundraiser and so grateful to Ms. Wilson and Ms. Brown for putting this together for her," said Matthews North Pitt High School teach Cortisha Skinner.

Matthews has been undergoing chemotherapy since her leukemia diagnosis in March. Just a few weeks ago, the North Pitt High School honor student was in intensive care unable to walk and talk, due to complications from her treatment.

On Saturday, the 16 year old was well enough to join her family and friends at the fundraiser. Matthews says the support has been great.

"It shows they care, "said Matthews.

The money raised from the fundraiser goes to help Matthews with her medical expenses.
