SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -

The Southern Pines Police Department is investigating a late-night murder, and detectives are asking the public for information in the case.

Sunday morning, the department identified the victim as Floyd Elmer Williams, 27, of Aberdeen.

At approximately 11:45 p.m. Saturday, an officer responded to a report of gunshots in the 100 block of S. Hardin Street. The officer found Williams lying in the street and a large crowd in the area, according to a printed statement from the department. The officer believed Williams was dead from a gunshot wound.

Officers were still at the scene hours later, according to a community notice sent out at 3:48 a.m.

Pinehurst police, Moore County deputies and Aberdeen police assisted "with crowd control and other activities associated with securing the crime scene," the statement read.

Southern Pines PD did not release further details Sunday morning.

The statement asked anyone with information about the crime to contact the Southern Pines Police Department at (910) 693-1481, or the Crime Tip Line at (910) 693-4110. Information can be provided anonymously and will remain confidential, according to the statement.
