Military bases cancel 4th of July fireworks celebrations

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

The Fourth of July will be missing its usual patriotic boom in the sky over some military bases this week.

Both Camp Lejeune and Fort Bragg have canceled their Independence Day celebrations this year.

After taking a hit from the $85 billion in across-the-board federal budget cuts earlier this year, base officials decided not to host the fireworks shows.

Many federal workers absorbed pay cuts through forced furloughs.  Officials say they couldn't justify paying overtime to personnel for security, transportation, logistics and safety when federal workers are losing pay while furloughed.
