Authorities in Franklin County arrested two men in a connection with a cockfighting ring on Saturday, making the arrest in a blood-splattered house the day children inside were expecting a birthday party.

Franklin County Sheriff's deputies seized 120 chickens, a malnourished horse and dog, two firearms and about 25 grams of cocaine from a home on Lynyrd Lane near N.C. Highway 64.

"They get together and do the cockfighting, and then they set up their next meeting and trade out drugs, money, weapons," said Sheriff Jerry Jones of Franklin County.

The animals were taken to the Franklin County Animal Shelter and the firearms and cocaine were sent to federal court in Wilmington.

Both men have been placed in the Franklin County Jail. One of the suspects, Jose Rodriguez, was being held under an immigration detainer and a $50,000 bond.

Also arrested was his cousin, Eugenio Rodriguez.

There were children in the blood-stained home when authorities came to make the bust.

"There was supposed to be a birthday party for one of the children that was going to be at that house that afternoon," Jones said.

Neighbors said they saw screams of cockfighting at night and escaped roosters fight to the death.

"You could hear it," neighbor David Carlyle said. "They'd have parties at like 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning."

Federal agents are looking into the case, and child services specialists have been called in as well.
