Parents of Emerald Isle skateboarder sue hospital

Posted: Updated:

The parents of a Carteret County teenager, who died after a skateboarding accident, are now suing the hospital that treated him.

13-year-old Drew Hughes fell back in June skateboarding in Emerald Isle. His father says he fell backward and hit his head.
An ambulance took Drew to Carteret General, where staff decided to transport him to Vidant in Greenville.

During the trip, the suit claims Drew woke up and pulled out his breathing tube.
The ambulance pulled off to the side of the road, and with his parents waiting in a car behind them, workers improperly reconnected the tube, putting it in his esophagus, instead of his lungs.
The lawsuit claims that mistake forced Drew to go without oxygen more than 30 minutes.

The suit says, by the time crews realized there was a problem, Drew was brain dead.
The lawsuit accuses Carteret General for gross negligence and inflicting emotional distress on the family.

A makeshift memorial has been set at the scene where a teen skateboarder fell.

13-year-old Drew Hughes fell Friday skateboarding on TradeWinds Drive in the Lands End neighborhood of Emerald Isle.

His father said Monday that his son lost control when the skateboard waddled when going down a hill. His son fell backwards and hit his head on the pavement, giving him a concussion. He wasn't wearing a helmet.

Hughes died Saturday around 5 p.m. at Vidant. His father said it was due to brain injury caused from lack of oxygen.

Hughes was a student at Broad Creek Middle School and would have been a freshman at Croatan High School this fall.

His funeral is set for Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Emerald Isle Baptist Church.

Hughes' father said his son  enjoyed surfing and protecting other kids from bullying. He said his son had a bigger impact on the community then he realized.
