CLAYTON, N.C. -

A 77-year-old man behind the wheel of a rented Chrysler 300 smashed into a Clayton convenience store Monday morning.

Two people went to the hospital as a result of the accident at Sandhu's Gas Station and Convenience Store on Amelia Church Road.

Shattered glass marked the site of the accident.

Gustav LeGrande Baporis, 77, had pulled into the gas station with his wife in the passenger seat and accidentally rammed through the front doors and glass entryway, Clayton officials said.  He and his wife were not injured but  his car hit a customer inside.

Baporis hit another customer after putting the car in reverse.  Both men were taken to Johnston Medical Center in Clayton with non-life threatening injuries.

Baporis, of Clayton, told police he was unfamiliar with the rental car and lost control.   He will be charged with careless/reckless driving and failure to reduce speed to avoid hitting a person.
