Greenville's newest Walmart open for business

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The newest Walmart is now open in Greenville and several people have jobs because of it.

The 24-hour store located at NC33 East opened its doors for the first time Wednesday morning.

The store means jobs for more than 260 people, many who were unemployed before now.

Kevin McEachern is one of them. After a 26 year Army career, including time as a recruiter, he retired in 2008, but couldn't find a job until Walmart came to his neighborhood.

"Walmart gave me an opportunity," said Kevin McEachern, unemployed until Walmart job. "Walmart allowed me to be who I am, express myself and establish my leadership capability. For me it was a perfect fit. Coming from the military, Walmart has a structure, has discipline, and it also has camaraderie."

McEachern is now a receiving supervisor. He's in charge of a crew of 13 who unload trucks and stock the store.

Some of you were wondering when the new Greenville Walmart will open. 9 On Your Side stopped by the store on East 10th Street on Monday and employees are getting ready for the grand opening set for July 17th.

The 200-thousand sq ft. supercenter offers all your favorite Walmart products. However, with cutting edge technology used throughout the building, they're able to reduce their carbon footprint.

Ken Bedsole, the store's manager says the location will better serve residents who drive across town to the existing Walmart on Greenville Boulevard.

"I think a lot of the customers on this side of city, pass this area to go to Greenville to shop and they have to choose to go to the Washington store, so that's why we are very excited about the store being right in the middle to be able to serve both communities," Bedsole said.

Although the store has hired a majority of their 300 employees, Bedsole says they are always looking for great associates. To apply, visit www.walmart.com/apply

On Saturday, July 20th, the store will host a party out front with tons of giveaways and events.
