Posted: Updated:

A hospital in the east agrees to pay the federal government more than a million dollars for trying to defraud medicare.

The Department of Justice says Wayne Memorial Hospital agreed to pay $1,250,000 to settle allegations that they submitted false claims for kyphoplasty.

That's a procedure used to treat spinal fractures often caused by osteoporosis.

The Department of Justice says the hospital forced patients to stay overnight, often when it wasn't needed in order to get more money from the government.

In all, 55 hospitals in 21 states agreed to settle similar disputes with the federal government. The total amount of compensation equals more than $34,000,000.
