Camp Lejeune announces furlough-related closures, adjusted hours of operation

Posted: Updated:
CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -

Camp Lejeune announced Tuesday a list of furlough-related closures and adjusted hours of operation beginning July 8.

The base said it's all due to the impending furlough of Department of Defense civilians.

Back on May 14,  Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel said the furloughs were the result of the federal budget sequestration. The sequestration includes a $37 billion dollar cut to the DOD budget for the current fiscal year.

In June, notifcations were mailed out to civilian employees to let them know about the potential reduction in work and pay.

Starting July 8 and running through September 21, civilian employees paid with appropriated funds, with only a few exceptions, will be required to take one day of unpaid leave each week, for a total of 11 furlough days.  First responders are exempt from furloughs. Emergency services and response times are not affected.

To allow for the reduction in civilian workforce during the furlough periode, the following changes have been made:

-Defense Commissary Agency: Commissary closed Mondays.

-Naval Hospital Camp Lejeune: Pharmacy located at the Marine Corps Exchange closed Mondays

-Base Schools will be closed on the following dates: September 3, 4, 9, 16 and 23.

-The Vehicle Registration Office at Bldg 60 will close from July 8 to Sept. 30, 2013.  To accommodate this closure, the Visitor Center (Bldg 818, near the Main Gate) will be extending the hours of decal issuance/vehicle registration and check in/out to 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Monday through Friday.

-The ID Card Center will close at 4 p.m. on Monday, vice 6 p.m.

-Traffic Court will be closed on Fridays starting July 12.

-Legal Assistance Immigration Services closes at noon on Wednesdays, vice 3 p.m.

The base warns that it's always possible that additional customer and family services delays may also occur; costs of some services have also increased (e.g., barber shops and certain seasonal swimming pools).
