Young Tarboro golfer battles cancer; uses golf as outlet

Posted: Updated:

Ten year old  Simon Owens from Tarboro didn't quite win his age division in the Coastal Plains Junior Amateur this week.

He's still a big winner, though.

Simon is battling back from a cancer scare. He was diagnosed with childhood melanoma back in February. That was just the start.

Simon battled and made it back just in time for the golf season.

"He spent the month of may having treatments five days a week for four weeks to treat the melanoma," said Johanna Owens, Simon's mom. "Simon's really been strong and brave through the whole thing and golf has been one of the things he's excited about. Fortunately, it hasn't messed up his game."

Just like in golf, fighting cancer features both highs and lows. Simon took it all in stride.

"When Ii first heard about it we were at the dermatologists and they said it probably wasn't anything," explained Simon. "I was upset to hear that it was something and that it wasn't just a mole.  It didn't hurt or anything. I was just upset, wasn't happy."

Simon was the runner-up in the 10-under division in his age group this week.
