Organizers prepare for Morehead City July 4 fireworks show

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. -

Last minute preparations are underway for several fireworks shows tonight on the Crystal Coast.

In Morehead City, crews finished arranging the hundreds of mortar tubes they'll shoot the fireworks from.

Shortly before the 9 PM show, they'll load the fireworks into the tubes.

Crews started getting ready for the show early Thursday morning, transporting loads of equipment by boat from the Portside Marina to Sugarloaf Island.

Organizers say most people don't realize how labor-intensive it is to set up a fireworks show.

"This show being out here on the island, and everything having to be hauled out by boats and barges, it's very involved. Very laborious," said Ray Watkins, display operator.

The fireworks show has to be on Sugarloaf Island instead of the mainland so the public can keep a safe distance away. In this case, that's about 300 feet, said Morehead City assistant fire chief Dykeman Baily.
