Man walking across NC to beat cancer

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

One man is walking across the state to beat cancer.

Friday, 9 On Your Side caught up with Brent Patterson in Farmville. He said his mom passed away in November from CLL, a form of Leukemia, after a 7-year battle.

Patterson started planning the trip as way to process her loss, realizing he could make it a fundraiser for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

So far, he's walked 420 miles, beginning in May in Murphy N.C. with a goal of finishing up the his trip in Ocracoke. There, he'll spread his mother's ashes at the beach.

Patterson said, along the journey, every person who he has met has also lost somebody to cancer, making it a unifying factor.

"Its really kind of my way of continuing my mom's fight. She had a really long and a hard fought battle," said Patterson. "I just, as a way of healing for me, I have to keep doing it for her. I have to keep fighting for her. This is my way of doing that. I feel like I have been walking towards this moment, and I'm looking forward to seeing what this moment has in store for me, as far as healing and self realization."
