90-yr.-old roller skater swears by method of staying young

Posted: Updated:

A 90-yr.-old Indianapolis man wants to stay fit and healthy so he heads to the skating rink every week to get in his exercise.

Eddie Winters is 90 years young.  In the 1940's he purchased his childhood home and he's been there ever since.  He trims his own hedges, cuts his own yard, and, of course, plants his own roses.

"I do the best I can, yes indeedy," said Winters.

But his best gets better on Thursday nights.  That's when he heads nine miles west to Skateland.  Once there he paces the floor at his own pace.  He even gives impromptu lessons to the willing.  And along the way he's made countless friends.

"I like to skate because it is awfully good exercise. It keeps you going. If you move around, you will continue to live, so I can I continue to serve the Lord," he said.

Doctors say spinning on eight wheels can be just as effective as riding a bike or jogging.  "Roller skating does all of that," said Stephen Krzyminski of IU Health.  "You are using your leg hip muscles for balance it's great exercise."
