NC school board weighs self-expanding charter

RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina's state school board will decide whether a charter school can expand its student enrollment before it's even opened for classes.

The State Board of Education on Wednesday discusses whether the decision by Guilford County's Summerfield Charter Academy to enroll more students will be allowed to stand. The state school board previously has taken the position that charter schools, which have fewer rules than traditional public schools, can't seek expansion without an operating track record.

The school due to open next month is run by National Heritage Academies, one of the country's largest charter-school management companies.

State education officials say if the school board decides to approve the school's request, the other 22 charter schools cleared to open next month also have the chance to expand.
