Posted: Updated:
EMERALD ISLE, N.C. -

Two people are safe after the Coast Guard rescued them from their 16-foot catamaran about a mile south of Emerald Isle, N.C.

Carteret County 911 dispatchers reported the incident to watchstanders around 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Crews arrived on the scene about 15 minutes later and assisted the pair in righting the boat.

"If these guys weren't wearing their life jackets, it could have been a much worse situation due to the high winds and sea state," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Trey Thompson, boarding officer aboard the SPC-SW. "It proabably saved their lives. We brought the girl on our boat, and put a towline on the port side of the catamaran to flip the boat right side up."

The Coast Guard escorted the two back to to the boat's mooring after it was brought upright.

There were no injuries reported.
