"Furlough Fridays" begin for Fort Bragg civilian employees

FORT BRAGG, N.C. -

July 12 marks the first "Furlough Friday" for some civilian Department of Defense employees at Fort Bragg. Approximately 8,400 civilian employees at Fort Bragg are being required to take 11 days off before September 30.

For approximately 1,400 civilian employees of Fort Bragg's Garrison Command those furlough days will be Fridays. Approximately 7,000 other DOD civilian employees at Fort Bragg will take the 11 furlough days on a more flexible schedule.

During the furloughs the employees' pay is cut 20 percent.

For soldiers it means going without some services on post during those furlough days. Without civilian workers on post, maintenance and repairs will have to wait. There will also be closed support offices, commissaries and health clinics.

Some business owners in Spring Lake said Friday they have already heard of people cutting back their spending because they or a family member is being furloughed.

Jessica Diaz said she has a friend looking for another job to make up for the pay cut.

"He went on a job interview yesterday," Diaz said. "It's going to be a pay cut for him of $1,000 [per month]. So that's a lot of money especially when you need it."

The civilian furloughs are also affecting military installations across the country including Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. The Department of Defense estimates the furloughs could save $1.8 billion by the end of the fiscal year on September 30.
