CARY, N.C. -

The head coach of the Green Hope High School girls soccer team has resigned after being charged with possession of child porn.

Robert Peterson resigned Wednesday from his position at Green Hope High School, a representative for the Wake County Schools said.

Cary Police arrested  Peterson, 43, early Saturday morning at his home on Tarbert Court.

Peterson is charged with six counts of third degree exploitation of a minor. He was released on a $50,000 secured bond.

On Monday, Peterson appeared before a Wake County judge. Because the charge is considered a class H felony, Peterson could face a minimum of 39 months in prison for each count if convicted.

His next court date is Aug. 5 at 9 a.m. for a probable cause hearing.

Police say the charges are not related to an inappropriate relationship with a student.

It stems from chatroom activity and possession.

Warrants obtained by WNCN show pages and pages of visits to a child porn website. Police say he entered a chatroom to talk with another visitor, who was actually a detective.

Warrants say Peterson said in the chatroom, he was into "little girls". He stated he wanted to meet up with the other man and share pictures.

He also told the detective, "Man, so glad I found a local guy who pervs like me!"

The Green Hope girls soccer team won the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 4A state championship in May.

The Falcons finished the season undefeated and ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Peterson also teaches social studies at Green Hope.

Some of Peterson's former students expressed shock and disbelief. One former student said Peterson taught law, which made his arrest even more hard to believe.

Stella Shelton, with the Wake County Public School System, said Peterson has worked at Green Hope since August 2001, and has been suspended with pay.
