Dr. Ethan Lenker named new Pitt County Schools Superintendent

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

The Pitt County School Board has named Dr. Ethan Lenker as the new Superintendent. The announcement came during the Board of Education meeting on Monday.

"Thrilled. Excited. It's a big opportunity for myself and my family, and we're certainly looking forward to the challenges and becoming part of Pitt County," said Lenker.

Lenker comes to Pitt County from Sampson County, where he was the superintendent since 2008. Prior to that he served as a superintendent of Jones County. He has nearly 25 years of experience in education.

Lenker is no stranger to eastern North Carolina. He earned is Doctorate of Education from East Carolina University.

During his career Lenker was named the Jones County Principal of the Year in 2002. Lenker also received the Southeast Superintendent of the Year by the North Carolina Association of School Administration in 2012.

No matter where he goes, Lenker says it's all about creating opportunities for the students.

"It's about this five-year -olds becoming 18-year-olds going off to the  college, or the military, or the workforce, and being college and career ready. We know good instruction. We know what the curriculum is. We know how to asses kids. So now, we have to make sure it's all on the same page," said Lenker.

The board has been on the hunt for a new superintendent since Dr. Beverly Emory accepted a new job back in March.

On July 1st Michael Cowin became interim superintendent. He took over for Dr. Emory after her last day on June 30th.

Back in April board members told 9 On Your Side that Chairman Mark Whichard was considering applying for the position so he removed himself from the hiring process.

The board considered 17 candidates from six different states before selecting Lenker.
