Case against New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis continued

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. -

The case against New Bern Mayor Lee Bettis has been continued until October.

Bettis wasn't on hand for the first appearance in a Havelock court Thursday morning.

Just last week, Craven County's district attorney announced a special prosecutor will take the case.

Back in May, police charged Lee Bettis with driving while impaired after 911 callers said he was driving all over the road.

Bettis blew a 0.0 on the breathalyzer test. So officers took a blood sample and sent it to the State Bureau of Investigation to test for other substances.

That report showed Xanax was in his system.
