CSS Neuse ready for visitors

Posted: Updated:
KINSTON, N.C. -

After a 50 year wait, the CSS Neuse is ready to receive visitors at its permanent home in Kinston.

Today's festivities began in front of the Lenoir County Courthouse where dignitaries unveiled a brand new historical marker about the ship.

A block away the doors to the CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center opened to visitors for the first time.

For now, people can only see the Neuse from above, but that will change next year.

Kinston leaders hope the Neuse will draw lots of people to downtown.

"People love to research and visit their history, so we are glad we've got a huge place for them to come visit here in Lenoir County," said B.J. Murphy, Kinston mayor.

History interpreters tell the story of the Neuse Tuesday through Saturday from 9 to 5.
