5 local newspapers close in Triangle

Posted: Updated:

Five local newspapers in the Triangle will close Aug. 1, Civitas Media announced Thursday.

The company will close the Fuquay-Varina Independent, the Garner News, the Holly Springs Sun, the Cleveland Post and the Apex Herald. The announcement continues a rapid shrinking of the newspaper business as consumers migrate to the web.

Civitas, based out of Davidson, said it is also closing three newspapers in Ohio.

"Our core business is focused on developing community news and information portals, in areas that are predominately rural and would not be served well otherwise," Civitas CEO Michael Bush said on the newspaper's websites. "The suburban newspaper isn't a fit in this business model."

Civitas said it has 1,400 associates across 11 states.

The Garner News has been in business 48 years, according to its website.

The Fuquay-Varina Independent has existed 77 years, the newspaper said.

The Apex Herald is newer, at 17 years old, the Holly Springs Sun is 15 years old and the Cleveland Post 15 years old.
