Alligator warning signs posted in Jacksonville

Posted: Updated:
JACKSONVILLE, N.C. -

The city of Jacksonville put up signs to warn citizens of alligators and to discourage duck feeding.

The signs are now posted at Mill Creek Green where Tuesday night an alligator attacked and ate an 80 pound Husky.

City officials say feeding wild animals in the area may have unintended consequences. Such as attracting alligators who eat the wild animals.

Alligators are native to the New River and the creeks along the New River.

Mostly they eat fish, turtles and other small animals, but ducks become an attractive meal when they sit along the banks of the river.

Residents are also advised that they should keep their pets on leashes and keep children away from the water, especially at dawn and dusk.
